Woo hoo! Today I get to share the official news that my book has won the AHA's J. Russell Major Prize for best book in French history. Thank you to @AHAhistorians and to my brilliant editor Brandon Proia @brndnpr See you all in NYC! https://www.uncpress.org/book/9781469641188/organic-resistance/
Hello #twitterstorians and other learned people, has anyone got any good reading recommendations on French policy toward the conflict in Bosnia during the 1990s?
This was just outstanding. Highlight: Joan Dejean looking at how the rise in prostitution arrests was the result of a crown eager to send women to the colonies and patriarchs who wanted to cut daughters out of the inheritance to free up money for speculation. Brilliant stuff. https://twitter.com/EconSociology/status/1212822726039232521
When your husband is a personal trainer #histgym is no joke.
I feel compelled to report that class discussion revealed Mintz to be more careful than I thought. The claims about caloric density and poor nutrition come in passages about the 20th C. BUT he does tend to let them bleed into bigger arguments about industrial modernity.
I can't hear "Man In Uniform" without bursting into dance. https://twitter.com/SimonRetromania/status/1224748774922182658
Rereading Sweetness and Power for class this afternoon. Two questions: How did 18th and 19th century English people know that sugar wasn't as good for them as vegetables; and how did they know sugar was calorically dense? Mintz makes both claims and I am skeptical.
Happy Global Palindrome Day! The last Palindrome Day in all Gregorian date formats was 909 years ago in 11/11/1111, long before the Gregorian calendar was a twinkle in the papal eye. Here's Demetri Martin's 224-word palindromic poem "Dammit I'm Mad" to celebrate
“It’s like Mississippi in the 1930s.” But more even than the past, Centreville looks like the future ... unfolding at the confluence of climate catastrophe, structural racism, infrastructural deterioration, and widespread indifference to black suffering. http://bostonreview.net/class-inequality-race/walter-johnson-american-bottom#.XjZFUe3MvhQ.twitter
Using my university's MyTrips registration for the first time. How is this not just straight-up spying?
I'm always amazed when academic research "discovers" things that are already patently obvious. That said, at least women now have a study to point to when they need to legitimise their claims regarding unfair treatment. https://twitter.com/OxfordJournals/status/1222150337831718913
Jet lag, the horror
Dessicated eyeballs burn,
Ne'er again, I lie.
Oh -- and @Robert_Z_Larson I will definitely not be submitting a receipt for my box of toffees, even though they are what I am eating for dinner.
Hello England! (This Tweet is dedicated to @rpanchasi)
It's about time this made it into the mainstream American press. That nothing is being done to protect these women, or to find them once they've gone missing, should be a source of deep collective shame. https://twitter.com/nytimes/status/1219228120273780736
This looks like an extraordinary workshop. https://twitter.com/RuthHallPLAAS/status/1219682233046437888
The constant sounding of the coffee timer is really harshing my chamber-music-plus-chai buzz over here at Caffé Nero.
I did a piece on the trans-Atlantic left and the Green New Deal for @ForeignPolicy
Perhaps of interest to @tedfertik @70sBachchan
Just got my free 1619 PDF. Looking forward to teaching sections of this in my advanced seminar on the history of capitalism. For those of you out there who have taught it already, did you pair it with academic texts?
Does anyone know of any good studies looking at *how* Wall Street lobbies? Not its influence per se, which is well documented, but the balance between collective action v's individual firm lobbying. (RTs welcome.)
