My buddy Hector just translated my talk to Spanish! I’m grateful to him since half the talk is about Costa Rica. Feel free to share with folks who prefer Spanish to English. https://twitter.com/archaearama/status/1138109210418438144
the flanges (overhanging ridges) on this tufa are spectacular! Side view of the tower and bottom view of one flange. Very reminiscent of the flanges at the pescadero vent field in this video: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=8RhOrKrNv2M&t=129s #GeoBio19
We have a new professional society call the Geobiology Society. We love life, rocks, and beer - not necessarily in that order. Our meetings are every two years in Banff, and inclusion of ALL people is written into our bylaws. Please join us! https://www.geobiologysociety.org/ https://twitter.com/ProfMaggie/status/1139217329533804544
Are you a female entreprenuer? (Or are you considering becoming one?) Consider applying to the Cartier Women's Initiative Award. It's a cool program! @CartierAwards https://www.cartierwomensinitiative.com/
Much more dry, lots of gas, no lake and more fumaroles. Witnessed few phreatic eruptions while we were down there...
Here's my new @TEDTalks! It's got microbes. It's got volcanoes. It's got cameos from @d_giovannelli, Carlos Ramirez, @pbarry10 @Joy_Buongiorno, @kfullzz, and @OVSICORI_UNA. Really, it's about life deep in Earth's crust and why verrrry slow things matter! https://www.ted.com/talks/karen_lloyd_the_mysterious_microbes_living_deep_inside_the_earth_and_how_they_could_help_humanity
On this #WorldEnvironmentDay, I am appreciating the last bits of pristine nature we have. Consider this 'pink sunset' - a girl watching over a pond of chemical waste from a leather industry in Bangladesh. We often fail to see the severity of pollution in developing countries.
My 9 yo and I researched and wrote an article about the late great Marie Tharp, who helped map the oceans before mapping the oceans was cool, and today it was PUBLISHED at @smoremagzine - a science mag for kids. I'm so proud of my daughter, and happy that this magazine exists.
[disclaimer: The Carbon Mineral Challenge does note condone eating rocks no matter how closely they resemble dairy products.]
On this #NationalCheeseDay, we give you nine carbon-bearing minerals that look a bit like fancy cheese. Find out more about our search for new carbon-bearing minerals at http://mineralchallenge.net #DCOChallenge
Also, thanks @d_giovannelli, for making sure I didn't miss this lovely paper!
Do you share my obsession about what microbes are *actually* doing in nature? Like when they're starving and steeped in a tea of frenemies? If so, please read @Begum_Topcuoglu's wonderful paper about methanogen isotope fractionation and reversibility. https://doi.org/10.1128/AEM.00180-19
.@baratunde’s talk at #TED2019 was SO GOOD and important that I considered just trudging back home from Vancouver rather than staying to give my talk a few days later. Y’all should watch it! https://twitter.com/HelenWalters/status/1133760010348126208
In case anyone forgot: "y'all" is the gender-inclusive pronoun the world needs right now.
[And, the apostrophe goes after the "y'" because it's an abbreviation for "you all"]
When the @TEDTalks speaker coach speaks, she rocks it! @BriarGoldberg, a Columbine survivor, talks about how to break out of the trap of impotent gestures to deal with gun violence. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRhHBCe2tyU
🚨🚨MY @TEDTalks IS HERE!!🚨🚨
So, listen up: society rewards confidence in some, and punishes it in others. For some of us, confidence is a revolutionary choice-and it's been the greatest fight of my life.
Last 30 min at @AspenInstitute: I’ve been mistaken for a musician (“Great performance last night.” “No, I’m a marine biologist.”) and a security guard asked a colleague repeatedly if I’m “supposed to be here.” Yes, I’m an event facilitator wearing an all-access wristband. #Racism
