The Intercept published an investigative piece reporting the push to repeal the death penalty, which heavily features Nebraska’s movement for abolition. I’m pleased to be quoted in this piece and I hope you read it.https://interc.pt/2DIAV6V  by @lilianasegura, @chronic_jordan

.@chronic_jordan & @LilianaSegura continue their amazing, intrepid reporting on the criminal injustice system. It’s the dogged determination of @helenprejean but in non-nun form. The Condemned — a death-row dataset by The Intercept https://theintercept.com/series/the-condemned/

This is long but well worth your attention. Even if you already oppose the death penalty, you're very likely to learn something https://twitter.com/chronic_jordan/status/1201871543246217216

Today my colleagues published a project years in the making — a dataset charting the arc of the death penalty over the past four decades (somehow it got more racist).

Amazing work. Hats off to @LilianaSegura, @chronic_jordan, @atrejones and @RogerDHodge. https://theintercept.com/series/the-condemned/

read this important work from @chronic_jordan & @LilianaSegura. proud to have been on the team collecting, cleaning, and analyzing this data. https://twitter.com/theintercept/status/1201862004123820032

We will be maintaining the data and will update it three times per year. You can find the entire dataset on GitHub 7/7 https://github.com/firstlookmedia/the-condemned-data

And despite the fact that many still insist the death penalty is necessary — &, shockingly, even claim it is functional — increasingly there are bipartisan efforts to abolish the wasteful and inequitable practice. Particularly in western states. 6/7 https://theintercept.com/2019/12/03/death-penalty-abolition/

The data shows that, as always, the death penalty is arbitrary & capricious. & that it is very much a factor of zip code. Orlando SA Aramis Ayala said this back in 2017. Then Gov. Rick Scott didn’t like it. But guess what? @DonellAyalaEsq was right. 5/7 https://theintercept.com/2019/12/03/death-penalty-reform-prosecutors/

Among the most startling, if not entirely shocking, revelations? The realization that the death penalty, always a racist endeavor, has become even more so. Looking at the death penalty in Texas provides a great lens through which to see this. 4/7 https://theintercept.com/2019/12/03/death-penalty-race-texas/

We worked with a group of awesome & incredibly talented teammates who’ve put in so many hours on this project — & we encountered a lot of issues compiling the data. So, we wrote about why we decided to take this on & about the issues we encountered. 3/7 https://theintercept.com/2019/12/03/death-penalty-capital-punishment-data/

It’s been a long & difficult process, mostly because the state of record keeping is pretty bad. Incomplete & inaccurate. It’s startling, really, considering that we’re told people sentenced to death are the “worst of the worst,” justifying their murder in our collective name. 2/7

For the last 3y, @LilianaSegura & I have been working on collecting data on ppl sentenced to death in active death penalty jurisdictions since July 2, 1976, the day SCOTUS reauthorized capital punishment. 1/7

@theintercept published the results today: https://theintercept.com/series/the-condemned/

How do you know if a fingerprint examiner is competent? How they do on proficiency exams is supposed to tell you something. But, you know, it really doesn't. https://theintercept.com/2019/11/29/fingerprint-examination-proficiency-test-forensic-science/

What, if anything, do proficiency tests say about the abilities of the forensic examiners taking them? https://twitter.com/theintercept/status/1200431934003961858

This is an excellent thread by my amazing colleague @LilianaSegura. The "casual cruelty" baked into the criminal justice system is maddening, the arbitrariness of prison "rules" confounding. https://twitter.com/LilianaSegura/status/1196198439685672961

Texas's top criminal court wants to hear more from #RodneyReed regarding evidence that the state w/held evidence from him at trial & that it sponsored false testimony. They're also wondering, might Reed be innocent? https://theintercept.com/2019/11/17/rodney-reed-stay-of-execution/

This does NOT mean that you should stop reminding @GovAbbott about the problems with the #RodneyReed case. Just saying. @innocence https://twitter.com/GregAbbott_TX/status/1195487780144664576
