I just honestly do not understand how this is even possible under #asylum law. How, who, what determines #ElSalvador’s ability to provide reasonable asylum? There are a startling number of people in ES who are internally displaced due to extortion and violence.

NEW: #Boston’s #asylum sub-office has “2-3” asylum officers back hearing affirmative interviews after resources were shifted last month to credible fear interviews for pending border cases.

👆That’s according to @USCIS officials.

We talk more about the Mass. - El Salvador connection and the role of #TPS here 👇 https://www.wbur.org/news/2018/09/21/from-mass-to-el-salvador-families-are-bracing-for-the-end-of-tps

Interesting.

A little over a year ago, I sat in a meeting w @RepMcGovern and others who listened to then Salvadoran Pres. Sánchez Cerén talk about how devastating the end of #TPS would be for #ElSalvador and the country’s economy.

(~17% of GDP comes from remittances) https://twitter.com/jonathanblitzer/status/1175122438037954560

A heads up: #MedicalDeferredAction does not entitle anyone to free healthcare.

It let’s them apply to stay in the country while receiving medical treatment.

They may be eligible for subsidized healthcare in some cases. I’m told many also pay out of pocket or w priv insurance. https://twitter.com/r16joy/status/1174990412747923456

Last month, federal #immigration officials quietly ended #medicaldeferredaction without notifying the public, telling immigrants with serious illnesses they needed to leave the U.S. within 33 days.

Yesterday, the government reversed course. https://www.wbur.org/news/2019/09/19/uscis-resume-medical-deferrals-deportation

.@DHSgov has directed @USCIS to resume processing #MedicalDeferredAction requests.

The 9/26 House subcommittee hearing & subpoena are still on the table.

@ACLU_Mass says it looks fwd to govt’s response to pending litigation filed in #Boston fed court. https://www.wbur.org/news/2019/09/19/uscis-resume-medical-deferrals-deportation

.@RepPressley told us just earlier this week that she was initiating the subpoena process within Oversight committee in an effort to get more info about the end of #medicaldeferredaction.

And @RepRaskin just yesterday scheduled a second subcommittee hearing for 9/26.

.@RepPressley then called for a House subcomittee hearing at which she and many other Dem's were unsatisfied with the lack of information provided by govt. witnesses.

Oh, in the meaintime @ACLU_Mass sued for the reinstatement of #medicaldeferredaction in Boston's fed court.

A little background; we first reported on the end of #MedicalDeferredAction about a month ago when Boston-area immigrants began receiving denials.

@RepPressley, @SenWarren and @SenMarkey then gathered 120+ Congressional signatures asking @DHSgov and @USCIS for more info.

.@JeromeRCampbell has spent weeks collecting police records from "Operation Clean Sweep." He found most people arrested were not charged with trafficking or violent crimes. Most were charged for just possession or old warrants: https://www.wbur.org/news/2019/09/19/south-end-arrests-review

The government is taking about 500 acres of public land and transferring it to the military so they can more easily build part of the border wall https://www.wsj.com/articles/more-than-500-acres-of-public-land-to-be-used-for-border-wall-construction-11568847685
