Austin Ekeler, like all NFL running backs, is more than good enough to start in Gordon's stead.
Austin Ekeler was top-10 in Production Premium, True Yards Per Carry, Yards Per Touch, and Breakaway Run Rate among qualified running backs last season.
Last season, Austin Ekeler ranked:
- 6th of 61 RBs in PFF Grade (83.6)
- 7th of 56 RBs in Elusive Rating (67.6)
- 6th of 56 RBs in Yards per Carry (5.23)
- 7th of 31 RBs in Yards per Target (7.62)
... and was better than Melvin Gordon in each stat.
Current ADP: RB42, Round 9
Melvin Gordon, who's played a full season only once in his 4 years, and who's only averaged over 4ypc once in his career, is going to hold out for a new contract? Good timing. The team is a Super Bowl contender and Ekeler isn't a viable replacement. https://twitter.com/AdamSchefter/status/1149316148074299393
Notable contracts expiring in 2019-20:
But a RB wants to get paid...
I’m a Chargers fan & I also had Ekeler everywhere last year. He fell off in the second half of the season. He’s not a workhorse back
I wrote about this potential a month ago. Gordon is terrific, but the Chargers have Austin Ekeler and Justin Jackson. They also have a ton of upcoming deals. https://twitter.com/adamschefter/status/1149315513211899904
Melvin Gordon is holding out for that new contract, but he’s got two guys behind him in Austin Ekeler and Justin Jackson who can make up for his production just fine folks.
Reasons Melvin Gordon wants a new deal:
1) Austin Ekeler breathing down his neck
2) He hit a 4.0 YPC for just the first time in his 4-year career last year. Wanted to cash in while the irons hot because he knows that's never going to happen again.
Austin Ekeler is the Chargers modern day Danny Woodhead with Phillip Rivers trust. With Melvin Gordon heading towards a hold out wheels are up for Ekeler. He is James White, Nyheim Hines, Jalen Richard and Ito Smith. His role could increase substantially. Fantasy Football gold.
Melvin Gordon massively overplaying his hand:
1) RBs don't matter
2) Has been inefficient/volume-based RB for career
3) < 4.0 YPC in three of four seasons
4) RBs don't matter
5) Ekeler & Jackson

Madden 20 Ratings for the #Chargers
Gordon III 92
M. Williams 81
Super Bowl MVP Austin Ekeler.
Austin Ekeler is another personal favorite. I bought him with the intention that he'll be a consistent flex play in ppr with Tyrell gone. Those vacant targets have to go somewhere and I don't see Mike Williams vastly improving on target count. Ekeler will play the underneath role
Players that I definitely will reach for in redraft:
- DeSean Jackson
- Tyrell Williams
- Chase Edmonds
- Austin Ekeler
- Tyler Boyd
Ekeler the wreckeler!

I like Melvin Gordon. But the Chargers need to prioritize other players’ extensions.
Trade Gordon, sign Ajayi or Blount.
DO NOT make Ekeler RB1. Ajayi or Blount can carry the majority of the running game with Ekeler’s and Jackson’s help
Melvin Gordon's holdout raises Austin Ekeler and Justin Jackson value. But lets not forget about the #Chargers Gun-Slinging quarterback Phillip Rivers. If Gordon holds out like Le'Veon Bell did last year, Rivers could become a top 7 #fantasy quarterback this season! #NFL #Value
